Americans are turning to therapeutic massage for relief from injuries and certain chronic and acute conditions, to help them deal with the stresses of daily life, and to maintain good health.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, massage therapy is estimated to be the third most prevalent type of alternative/complementary medical treatment sought by American adults. Dr. David Eisenberg’s landmark 1990 study on the use of alternative therapies was updated in 1997, and results indicate that: use of alternative medicine increased from 34% to 42% of American adults; expenditures increased from $14 billion per year to $21.3 billion; and, chiropractors and massage therapists now account for half of all visits to alternative health care practitioners. Surveys conducted for the American Massage Therapy Association by the Opinion Research Corporation indicate that 32% have received a massage in the past five years, and 90% of American adults know of health benefits that motivate people to receive massage therapy.
