A Note on Our Use of the Word “Spiritual”

When we say “spiritual” in the catalog and in course materials, we mean the awareness of, and reflection upon, the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the self. Through personal exploration and contemplation, one can develop an inner life. One can then feel a sense of personal responsibility and make a life-long commitment to positive change and growth. By establishing and nurturing an inner dialog and process, one can improve personal interactions and enjoy a fulfilling experience of life.

Philosophy of Health Works Institute, Massage Therapy School
As each person goes through the journey of life, opportunities arise for experiencing a heightened sense of aliveness, vitality, and well being. Relief from physical, emotional, and spiritual difficulties often occurs in conjunction with receiving therapies that are part of complementary and alternative medicine. When one experiences relief from pain or discomfort, one can be more effective at work and at home, more at peace on the inside, and more accepting and loving on the outside. The theories and techniques presented in our program help practitioners and clients increase awareness of, and make positive changes to, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. As the benefits of these therapies are more widely experienced, there is the potential for a ripple effect to positively impact numerous people.
